  • Lydia Proctor is a forty something wife and parent, full-time library cataloger and part-time genealogist. On the weekends she is the volunteer librarian for the Tri-Cities Genealogical society in a suburb south of Los Angeles called Rancho Camino. When a troubled patron needs help, Lydia is the first one contacted not only because of her position at the library, but also because of her twenty-plus years of experience as a genealogist. One day after work, Lydia receives one of those calls. The task is not only baffling but intriguing, and she sets up an appointment to meet with the prospective client.
  • Faye Carter is Lydia’s best friend since high school. She is a rookie cop on the local police force, who recently married a seasoned cop with two sons. Their teamwork is fine tuned, with Faye’s gut feelings and intuition helping to guide Lydia on her quest in solving genealogical riddles.
  • Muriel Grant is Lydia’s right arm at the genealogical library. Muriel is a widowed septuagenarian who loves to wear clothing that has a genealogical theme. She organizes the volunteers, worries about the elderly patrons (the ones older than her), and keeps the place running when Lydia cannot be there. During the course of the investigation Muriel volunteers to help Lydia evaluate the evidence, providing feedback and ideas as needed.
  • Julia Franklin is the woman who finds Lydia, and asks for help in her quest to prove, or disprove, that her grandfather was involved in the deaths of three of his five wives. She is also a septuagenarian, who is usually very mild mannered, unless presented with something she feels enormously strong about. Through Julia’s family project many interesting characters are introduced (including the evil protagonist) both in the past and present.
